Michael Maher, Ph.D.

Michael Maher, Ph.D. is a Director and Co-founder of The Reeds Center. He specializes in cognitive-behavioral treatments of anxiety, OCD and related disorders including health anxiety. He has expertise in treatment resistant anxiety and OCD as well as in impulse control disorders (Trichotillomania, skin picking and tic disorders).

Prior to opening The Reeds Center, Dr Maher was a Research Scientist in the Anxiety Disorders Clinic and The Center for OCD and Related Disorders at Columbia University Medical Center. His work there examined Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for those with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The goal of this work has been to improve treatments for those who suffer from anxiety, OCD and related disorders. Dr. Maher also administered treatment, trained, and supervised therapists for these studies. Additional interests include methods to improve the training and dissemination of evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders.

Dr. Maher provides training and supervision to psychologists and graduate students in psychology including interns at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has lectured on clinical psychology, and the neurobiology and treatment of anxiety disorders to undergraduates and doctoral students in psychology as well as to medical residents in psychiatry.

He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Rutgers University and gratefully acknowledges the training he received from a range of experts that include Dr. Edna Foa and colleagues, Dr. Blair Simpson, Dr. Terry Wilson, Dr. Martin Franklin, Dr. Alec Miller, Dr. Gail Steketee, and Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Dr. Maher is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and the American Psychological Association.
